Welcome to Year 4 Class 9

This half term the children will be writing various genres some of which are;
· Fantasy Story
· Non-chronological reports
The children's work will be focused around the potions theme and their class read of Harry Potter. We have a continuous focus on children's handwriting and spellings this half term. It is important that children are learning their spellings at home throughout the week.
include a range of language features in their writing such as fronted adverbials, personification and metaphors just to name a few.
Reading: To capture the children's imaginations we will be reading Harry Potter and the philosopher's stone which will link into their creative writing for this terms topic.
We are encouraging children to read at home and bring in their reading diary on a weekly basis.
This half term the children will be focusing on various aspects of mathematics.
· Formal multiplication
· Formal Division
· Word Problems
· Symmetry and reflection
· Mental Maths
This half term the children will be learning about States of matter. They will be learning about the properties of solids, liquids and gases. They will be taking part in many science experiments investigating changes in state.
Art and Design Technology
Children will be creating their own potion bottles made of clay.
Creating pictures using collage
Using various mediums such as oil pastels, water colours and charcoal.
We will be focusing on the artist ‘Carl Warner’
Children will be learning to using the software Purple Mash which has a range of various programming and the children will be creating their own piece of music.
Children will be following the scheme of Charanga where they will be learning how to sing various songs and play instruments along to the rhythm of the music.
Going into the second year of learning French, the children will be learning how to say different shapes in French.
Philosophy 4 Children which encourages children to think about questions.
During this term the children will be learning about Hinduism and what it means to be a Hindu.
Spelling and homework
Children are given spellings on Friday every week to learn, which, should be returned to school the following Wednesday (ready for the test on Friday).
All children are now following the Rising Stars Spelling Programme. This is a Programme tailored to teach the statutory Year 4 spellings. Each week children will record the spelling rule in their spelling book and we will be also learning about this in class.
Year 4 will now have PE on a Monday with Manchester City leading a range of different activities. Please ensure your child brings the appropriate PE kit into school on this day.
Maths at home
In Year 4, children are expected to know all their times tables up to 12 by the end of the year. The children are given regular tests and complete times table challenges throughout the week.
