Elm Wood Primary School

Welcome to Year 3 Class 8

Class Teacher: Miss Robinson

Teaching Assistants: Mrs Jackson, Mrs Harris and Miss Fitton

In Spring Term 1 we will be studying Ancient Egypt

In English, we will be reading the brilliant book ‘Flat Stanley: The Great Egyptian Grave Robbery.’

We will be doing lots of different writing tasks based on our class text including planning and writing our own adventure story, writing persuasive adverts and developing setting and character descriptions using descriptive vocabulary.

Dictionary work and the use of conjunctions, adverbs and prepositions to express time and cause is another big focus for Year 3 this half term.

This half term we will be learning all about fractions including recognising and using fractions as numbers: unit fractions and non-unit fractions with small denominators. Also, we will learn to count up and down in tenths and learn how to add and subtract fractions with the same denominator within one whole. We will continue to recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 3, 4, and 8 x tables as well.

During this half term, we will also measure, compare, add and subtract: lengths (m/cm/mm); mass (kg/g) and volumes/capacity (l/ml).

During our Science lessons we will be learning all about light and dark. We will learn that we need light in order to see things and that dark is the absence of light. Plus, we will learn about reflection of light and how and why shadows are formed and change in size.

In our History and Geography lessons we will be learning all about life in Ancient Egypt including the importance of The River Nile, what Egyptian writing was like, Egyptian pharaohs and gods and goddesses.

In our Art lessons, we will research Ancient Egyptian crowns and headdresses before designing, making and evaluating our own.

In Computing, we are learning about spreadsheets this half term and how to input data accurately and use branching databases.

This half term, Year 3 will be taking part in sessions led by MCFC where the pupils will develop their football skills. In early February of Spring Term 1, Year 3 will begin their weekly swimming sessions at Middleton Arena.
