Peasants, Princes and Pestilence

Lock your doors and pull up the drawbridge: the dreaded ‘Great Pestilence’ is here. We will use a range of source materials to research the symptoms of the Black Death. We will then learn about how the black death came to Britain and why it spread so quickly. We’ll investigate the effects of bacteria on the human body and find out about disgusting and dangerous plague ‘cures’. We’ll find out about the Black Death through history and make a timeline of outbreaks around the world.

 

English

In English this half term the children will be learning through a range of writing styles.

The children will be learning to:

Identify the audience for and purpose of the writing, selecting the appropriate form and using other similar writing as models for their own.

Perform their own compositions, using appropriate intonation, volume, and movement so that meaning is clear.

Select appropriate grammar and vocabulary, understanding how such choices can change and enhance meaning.

Assess the effectiveness of their own and others’ writing.

Reading

Throughout this topic the children will be analysing a range of non-fiction texts in order to develop their understanding of historical period we are studying. We will continue to read a wider range of texts during daily guided reading sessions.

Mathematics

This half term the children will be focusing on various aspects of mathematics:

* Place value and deeper understanding.

* Problem solving using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

* Using fractions, decimals and percentages.

* Measures - including metric and imperial.

* Geometry – angles, translation and shape.

History – A main focus of this topic will be history. The children will use a range of source materials to sequence the symptoms and changes that occurred when someone was infected with the Black Death. They will examine historical source materials to learn about the Flagellants. Also, they will study historical pictures of people from different social classes, making observations and judgements about their role and place in medieval society.

Geography – The children will continue to use maps to find out where the Black Death originated and how it first came to Britain. They will research the geographical factors which caused London to have one of the fastest growing infection rates.

Science – During investigations the children will record data and results using scientific graphs and labels. They will also draw diagrams and find out about the lifecycles of rodents, fleas and bacteria to understand how the plague spread.

Computing – The children will continue to work with coding programmes to create and debug algorithms.

Art & Design – Using a range of materials and techniques the children will create stained glass windows, a knight’s shield and a medieval coat of arms.

P.E – Cricket and rounders with EdStart.

R.E – Exploring different religious beliefs and traditions.

French – The children will continue the second year of learning French.
